My Approach to Therapy
As a therapist I am dedicated to helping you work through challenging life situations and develop increased resilience and self awareness. I believe that therapy is not only a way to help you resolve problems but it is also a process of working to gain a deeper understanding of yourself. I use a strength-based approach which helps you identify and draw on your strengths. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is a partnership. I work closely with you to make sure that therapy is a safe environment that promotes open communication, honesty, and trust.
Working with Children and Adolescents
When working with children and adolescents I am mindful of their developmental needs. For instance, adolescents often are struggling to assert their independence and to define themselves as individuals, within their families and peer groups. Therefore, I work with adolescents on ways that they can responsibly assert their autonomy. I also work closely with parents on ways to more effectively support their teenagers’ strivings for independence. Younger children need more support and structure. Therefore, I work closely with parents on ways that they can more effectively set limits and establish rules. I also work with children to help them develop increased self-esteem and stronger coping skills. I recognize that each child and adolescent is unique. Therefore, I am careful to respect the needs and values of the children, adolescents and families that I work with.
Working with Adults to Increase Awareness & Well-Being
In my work with adults I focus on helping adults recognize the thoughts, beliefs and patterns that may be causing them difficulties in relationships, at work/school, and in their family. I then work with my clients, using this increased understanding, to develop more effective ways of relating to others, coping with stresses, and overcoming challenges they are facing. My approach emphasizes respect for each person’s beliefs, values and strengths. It is my goal that therapy will help you find new perspectives and increased insight, support your emotional growth, and increase your overall sense of well-being.
Areas of Specialization
My areas of specialization include depression, mood disorders, trauma, PTSD, and substance abuse.
