Substance Abuse and Addictions
Substance abuse and addictions are complex problems that require individuals to make multiple changes, as they work to establish a healthy lifestyle. To address these complexities I subscribe to a systems approach which includes work with the individual and his/her family, as well as active engagement with the recovery community. While it is important to tailor therapy to meet the unique needs of the client, I believe that providing education on the disease model of addiction, devising a comprehensive relapse prevention plan (incorporating stress management techniques), and participation in a support group are the cornerstones for recovery. Since the effects of substance abuse are far reaching, I work with family members to address their concerns, including possible issues with codependency.
Stress Management
The demands of juggling personal and professional responsibilities frequently leave us feeling overwhelmed, angry, dissatisfied and even apathetic. To help you reduce your level of stress I focus on how you can more effectively prioritize and respond to the demands you are facing. I emphasize the importance of self-care techniques such as mindfulness, meditation and deep breathing exercises as well the importance of participating in fulfilling social and recreational activities. In addition, I work with you to integrate these strategies into your routine.
My General Approach to Therapy
Seeking help and examining the problems and issues you face are often difficult tasks. Therefore, establishing a trusting therapeutic relationship is essential if therapy is going to be effective. I focus on providing a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere that allows you to actively address your concerns and find positive solutions to problems. To help you confront and work through everyday challenges, I believe that it is critical to “tap into or mine” your strengths. By identifying and utilizing your strengths you can increase your resilience and confidence as well as generate healthy changes that can promote greater self-satisfaction and contentment with life.
